White Pine (Pinus strobus):
This magnificent pine is common in sunlit areas in both woodlands and along edges and hedgerows. It is certainly the biggest pine in New England, and close to one of the biggest trees. It can gain a girth of three to four people hand holding around its circumference at the base.
Some trunks are long and straight. It was briefly used as masts for ships but the wood’s brittleness made it a poor choice. It is a fast grower and great shade giver.
