European Bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara):
European bittersweet is an invasive vine. There is an American bittersweet but it is rare to find now that the European variety has run rampant through waste areas, edges, and hedges. It needs bright sunlight and relatively dry soils. A vine like this succeeds so well because it invests little into its structure. A tree spends a lot of energy in the development and structure of trunks and limbs. Vines have the advantage of just quickly growing up and over reaching the sunlight faster and more efficiently than the tree. Many trees have met their demise under the weight and shadows of European bittersweet.
The berries are beautiful and eaten by many birds.
