Eastern Box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina):
Eastern box turtles used to be a common turtle in our area, but are quickly becoming rare because of roadways, dogs, and habitat destruction. They have a long life span that reaches over a hundred years. They are omnivores and will eat berries, grubs, snails, mushrooms, and earthworms. In the winter time the turtles burrow into warm soil or rotting wood below the freeze line.
