Pictured here are the first 5 baby raccoons to be admitted into New England Wildlife Center’s hospital this year. They were found in Cohasset after their mother was killed by a car. Once admitted, our veterinary team got to work giving each of them a full examination. They were suffering from mild dehydration, but were otherwise in good health. As orphans, we will continue to care for them until they have learned the proper skill sets and social behaviors necessary for them to be independent out in the wild. As babies we will provide them with fluids, nutritional and heat support. We will vaccinate them against diseases such as rabies, distemper and parvovirus. Once they’ve been fully vaccinated and are about 3 months old they will be placed into our outdoor enclosure. While outside, NEWC staff are constantly initiating new enrichment techniques to help raccoon orphans develop strength and coordination, and to promote normal behavior patterns such as climbing and foraging for food. Ultimately these babies will be with us for around 5 months before being released. Let the journey begin!
