American toad (Anaxyrus americanus):
These toads are a common species found throughout eastern North America. They prefer to make their home in ponds, fields and woodlands at different times of the year. The American toad is able to change its skin color from yellow to brown using certain temperatures or stresses as a trigger for the change. They are easily identified by the large warts on their body, and their spotted bellies. They can survive anywhere that has dense patches of vegetation and a semi-permanent freshwater source, as well as a supply of insects. As tadpoles, they produce a chemical that can kill a fish when eaten, which significantly increases their chances of surviving and growing to adulthood.
