This is a Common Snapping turtle, who is close to release after spending months inside New England Wildlife Center’s hospital. He was originally admitted after a nasty shearing (ran over by car) injury to his carapace, which damaged muscle and his spinal cord. Cold-blooded Reptiles heal much slower than birds and mammals. This picture shows the progress on his shell, which is almost completely healed. He will soon be released back to the wild.
Remember that if you see a turtle crossing the road, slow down! If its safe to move, place them on the side they are walking towards. Thanks for making Massachusetts a safe place for turtles 🙂
