Hey Friends, this is a juvenile Common Snapping turtle one of three admitted to NEWC this week. Each received a veterinary exam, two were found to be in perfect health and one was suffering from a tail wound. The wound is deep but will heal in a few months time, we believe it occurred during his time in captivity when the three snappers were taken from the wild and illegally kept before being surrendered to the Center. Since winter is right around the corner, they will join the group of animals we will care for until warmer spring weather. This is to ensure they have the best chance for survival.

Wild animals are so very fun to watch, but make sure your interactions end there! These animals are in the wild for a reason, and will always do best in their natural environment. If you ever have a question about an animal, or are curious about what you can do to help should you come across an animal in need please call our front desk at 781-682-4878. We have educated, friendly staff who will guide you through the proper procedure to handle any wildlife situation. As a community, we can do this together!

Oh, and here’s a fun fact: The Common Snapping turtle’s close cousin the Alligator Snapper (Bigger/stronger) have a little protrusion on the end of their tongue, something that looks like a little worm. They fool fish into approaching, and then gobble them up! Smart!
