This is a young Rock Dove, who was admitted into New England Wildlife Center’s hospital around a month ago. He was found in a nest that had fallen out of a tree in Rockland. The mother seemed hurt, but was able to fly off. When she didn’t return the baby was brought to the Center. As we head into Fall, baby season is over and, this baby bird is the last one to be treated in our Quiet Baby Ward.
He was examined, and treated for blunt force trauma, caused by the fall. The damage was not severe, and since his admission he has been growing up very well. He is receiving nutritional support, eating out of a special seeding tube, similar to a weening plate. He will need a few more weeks with us, as he continues to develop adult feathers. He must also continue to improve his balance and increase his strength. He already flaps his wings, so he will soon begin to try and fly! This Rock Dove’s prognosis is good and we expect him to make it out to the wild soon.
