Pictured here is an Eastern Screech Owl nestling, who is no more than a few days old. This cotton ball look-a-like made his way into New England Wildlife Center’s hospital a week ago. As the weather warms, and good Spring weather starts to take hold we see much more activity from both animals and humans. This is the time of year that NEWC is busiest, as this increase in activity also leads to more wildlife injuries and the discovery of many orphaned baby animals.

This nestling Screech Owl was unfortunately displaced from his home after his tree was cut down. He was lucky to avoid injury during the fall, and was found by Braintree’s Department of Public Works. After being brought into NEWC’s hospital, he was found to be in great overall health. We gave him fluids and a good meal, and then set him up in our medical ward. Since he was healthy, our goal was to get him back out into the wild as soon as possible. Since he is still too young to survive on his own, he needs to be fostered into a new family of Screech Owl. This morning he made the journey to his new home, and was successfully fostered to a new family. Yay!
