Pictured here is a Mute Swan who has been recovering at New England Wildlife Center for two months. He was brought into our Hospital by Animal Rescue League back in December. He was found in Brockton, and was weak and lethargic after being caught up in fishing line. The fishing line wrapped around his left leg, it was so constricting it led to an infection. NEWC’s veterinary team worked to clear up the infection by performing multiple wound debridement surgeries and administering antibiotics. After fixing the lameness, the Swan began to lose weight. As he began to recover from the infection, he continued to be unable and disinterested in eating. Follow-up diagnostics determined that a parasitic GI infection was causing the weight loss. The Swan’s immune system was compromised. With time, medication and care, the Swan began to heal and gain weight. We are confident in his recovery and he will be released within the week.
