This is a Juvenile Red Squirrel currently being treated at New England Wildlife Center. He is one of four orphans found in Hull who were taking refuge in a pool’s heater system. Normally, babies are most prevalent during the spring and summer months, but there are always stragglers. These babies were found a few weeks ago, which means they will be ready for release just as we head into the cold winter. Due to this poor timing, and in order to give these babies their best shot at survival, the Center will be over-wintering the Squirrels with the help of local rehabilitators. We do this for many animals who would otherwise find it very difficult to acclimate themselves to such conditions after becoming well under the Center’s care. The Red Squirrels are currently growing well and are very healthy. They will continue to receive care after being transferred to their wintering facility. Our goal is to release them once it begins to warm up outside.
