This is a Barred Owl that came into New England Wildlife Center over the weekend. He was found in Braintree and exhibited signs of weakness and dehydration upon admission. After a quick workup he was found to be suffering from Rodenticide Toxicosis (Rat Poisoning), like so many others who’ve made their way through our doors. He has since received fluids and is stable. He is currently resting in our Medical Ward. The Barred Owl will
continue to receive treatment for 2-3 weeks before being re-assessed.

Barred Owls prefer to make their homes in mixed forests. They are skillful hunters who prey on small rodents and birds. They have a very loud and distinctive hoot, which some say sounds similar to the phrase “Who cooks for you?”. Barred owls normally do not move far from their territory and will not migrate. They have been found to move only around 6 miles from their nest.
